The Global Women in Marketing Awards 2024 has celebrated the work and achievements of two members of The Independent’s team. At last night’s ceremony in London, Andrew Morley was crowned Equality Advocate of the Year, whilst Beth Gordon picked up the Highly Commended award for Best Leader in Marketing.
The Equality Advocate of the Year award is reserved for “a male individual who has gone above and beyond to promote gender equality and encourage more female leaders in their own company and beyond.” Andrew, who is The Independent’s chief revenue officer, was praised for his genuine dedication and impact. The judges noted that his leadership at The Independent stands out for its authenticity: that he consistently advocates for equality through real action in an industry where bold declarations are often not followed by meaningful change. They also applauded Andrew’s work on charity initiatives, most recently through partnering with domestic abuse organisation, Refuge. He was surprise nominated by females within his team, who drew attention to Andrew’s record of fostering an environment where women lead, innovate and thrive.
On his success, the judges remarked: “If you want to hire for potential, you have to put the framework in place to support that potential. Morley leads with actions and not words, having had a phenomenal impact on The Independent’s culture. He must also get credit for The Independent’s ongoing partnership with Refuge, the domestic abuse charity. Truly a leader of actions, not empty platitudes. A worthy winner.”
Meanwhile, business marketing and communications director Beth Gordon received a Highly Commended gong in the Best Leader in Marketing category. This prize “recognises an individual who has demonstrated exemplary marketing and communications leadership in the last 12 months, impacting the performance of their organisation.”
Beth has helped to transform the perception of The Independent in the advertising industry and beyond, spearheading groundbreaking initiatives which demonstrate the brand’s unique position as a changemaker. Alongside projects which have increased The Independent’s prominence in and around music, her work has focused on raising money and awareness for charitable causes, amplifying marginalised voices and educating brands on how best to use their platforms for good.
The judges concluded that “Beth has successfully redefined The Independent’s trade brand with the purpose-driven tagline: Making Change Happen. A tagline which really underlines Gordon’s brilliance as a marketer. She makes things happen, she makes a difference and she has successfully driven the brand forward.”
The Global Women in Marketing Awards 2024 also awarded women from the likes of Def Jam and InfoSum, whilst Jaguar Land Rover won Company of the Year.
