As the sun sets on summer holiday season, here’s a jam-packed issue of Insider to kick start your September.
Hot off the press comes the news that The Independent has been shortlisted for the coveted Media Brand of the Year prize at this year’s Media Week Awards. We are so grateful to the judges and really proud of our team, especially as The Independent is the only news publisher to be a finalist.
The full shortlist can be viewed here.
Christian Broughton has been appointed as the new chief executive of The Independent. He will assume the role of CEO from 1 October, continuing an 11-year partnership with Zach Leonard, who will move from CEO to a new US-based role of global chief operating officer and president, North America, with a specific focus on growing the US business. The two appointments establish a leadership team for a fresh phase of global expansion, alongside editor-in-chief Geordie Greig, who joined The Independent at the start of this year.

News brand readership figures for July have been released by Ipsos iris*, which reveal that The Independent was the largest quality digital news brand again. It has now beaten titles including The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Times and The Sunday Times for four of the past six months. The Independent reached 21.3m readers, growing MoM (month on month) whilst the top 10 news brands on average dropped. Sports, travel and IndyBest did particularly well, whilst Indy100 was the fastest growing of the news brand pureplay titles, up +19% MoM and +68% YoY to 1.5m.
Meanwhile, July US Comscore data show another impressive month of growth for The Independent, as the publication doubles down on its US business focus. The Independent was the fastest growing UK news brand in the US YoY (year on year). It was also the second fastest growing title of the top 10 news brands in the US YoY, beating the likes of NY Post Network, The New York Times, USA Today, washingtonpost.com, dailymail.co.uk, theguardian.com and LA Times.
We’re proud to be partnering with the brilliant Global Women in Marketing Awards 2023, which we will be hosting at our London headquarters on 16 November. Entries are open now until 28 September. See here for more.
Refuge, our charity partner, is currently running an important campaign to help children who have fled domestic abuse. In the dash for safety, many children have to leave everything behind, including their school things. Refuge is asking people to help cover the cost of a new school uniform for a child who has arrived at one of its refuges with nothing, so they can have a fresh start this September.
